I Put Bleach on My Eczema for 30 Days. It Made Things Worse.

When I was 14 years old, my doctor told me to put bleach on my skin.

Not a cream. Not a prescription medication. Bleach — the same thing with a corrosive warning label on the bottle. The same thing we've all been told never to let touch our bodies.

I was too scared to do it at 14. But at 27, after my first full body eczema attack, I was desperate enough to try. I did it for a month. And what happened taught me something that 27 years of dermatologists, steroid creams, and oat baths never did.

What a Full Body Eczema Attack Actually Feels Like

By 27, I had been dealing with eczema since I was two years old. I was on steroid creams from age 2 to 25 — that's 23 years of medication just to manage my skin. The doctors cycled me on and off to avoid addiction, but the condition never resolved.

Then I had my first full body attack. Not patches on my arms or behind my knees. My entire body, head to toe, including my scalp — which caused significant hair loss. My skin felt like it was on fire. Everything I touched irritated it. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't wear certain clothes. I couldn't go outside. I didn't want anyone to see me.

When you're in that level of desperation, you'll try anything. That's when I remembered what that doctor told me at 14: put bleach in your bath.

Why Bleach Baths Seem Like They Work

I only needed a small amount — barely a teaspoon. It smelled strong but the quantity was tiny. And the results were immediate. After a full day of flare-ups and sensitivity, the bleach bath was a genuine relief. My skin calmed down. It became smooth, supple — almost unnaturally perfect looking. For a moment I thought I'd found the answer.

I did this every day for a month. I had about 20 hours of relief after each bath before the flare-up returned. I told myself this was just my life now — daily bleach baths to keep my skin manageable.

But I couldn't shake the fact that I was putting a corrosive substance on my body and calling it treatment.

What Nobody Tells You About Bleach Baths

Here's what actually happens when you take a bleach bath. The bleach kills the bacteria on your skin — that's why the eczema calms temporarily. But it doesn't just kill the bad bacteria. It destroys everything, including the natural bacteria your skin needs to protect itself.

Your skin is an organ. It's your largest organ. And it has a protective barrier made up of bacteria that keeps it functioning the way it was designed to. When you strip that barrier with bleach, your skin might look smooth and clear — but that smoothness is actually a sign that the skin has become thin and unprotected.

Every time I got in that bath, I was getting temporary relief at the cost of weakening the very system that was supposed to protect me. I was celebrating the destruction of my own protection.

After a month, the pattern was undeniable. Calm down after a bath. Flare up the next day. Calm down. Flare up. The cycle never broke — because the problem was never on my skin.

The Realisation That Changed Everything

In 27 years of dealing with eczema, not a single doctor ever said "let's look at what's happening internally." It was always something to put on my skin — a cream, a steroid, a bath. Always treating the surface. Always managing the symptom. Never asking why my body was producing this response in the first place.

My body was screaming for help from the inside. And every solution I was given was essentially telling it to be quiet from the outside.

I knew what triggered my worst attack — three shortbread cookies. That's all it took. The connection between what I was consuming and what was showing up on my skin was obvious once I stopped looking at my skin as the problem.

What Actually Healed My Skin After 27 Years

When I stopped treating my skin and started treating my body as one system, everything changed.

I removed the inputs that were draining my system — the habits, the stimulation, the things keeping my body in a constant state of stress and reaction. I regulated my body's natural rhythm by aligning with the right light and the right darkness at the right times, so my hormones could reset and my body could start functioning the way it was designed to.

Then I restored my body's ability to heal from the inside out. Not with bleach. Not with steroids. By supporting my body's own ability to regenerate — to build new cells, to reconstruct the protective barrier that had been destroyed for decades.

My eczema cleared within weeks. After 27 years of dealing with it.

My skin didn't just stop flaring. It transformed. It became thicker, stronger, more protective — everything it was supposed to be. The sugar cravings that had been linked to my flare-ups disappeared. I stopped reacting to foods. My energy came back. My mood stabilised. My brain fog lifted.

It was never about my skin. It was about my whole body. And once my body was supported properly, every symptom resolved. I'm officially 100% symptom free. Including the problems I poured bleach on.

If You're Considering Bleach Baths for Your Eczema

I understand why you'd try it. I tried it too. I tried everything for 27 years — steroid creams being the longest. And I can say definitively: your skin is not the problem. Your skin is the messenger. It's showing you what's happening inside your body.

Until you listen to that message instead of trying to silence it, the cycle will never break. You'll keep spending money. You'll keep trying new products. You'll keep getting temporary relief followed by another flare-up. Because nothing you put on your skin will ever fix what's happening underneath it.
