Why Probiotics Don't Fix Your Gut

Why Probiotics Don't Fix Your Gut

You finished a round of Rifaximin. Maybe your second. Maybe your third. Your practitioner told you the SIBO is cleared, now it's time to rebuild. So you started the probiotics. Megasporebiotic in the morning. Maybe Seed or Visbiome with food. Something else at night because a woman in a forum said that's when your gut lining repairs.

For a few weeks, you felt better. The bloating eased. Your digestion started to normalize. You thought, finally. This is working.

Then it came back. The bloating. The gas. The food reactions. The brain fog. All of it. And your practitioner said the SIBO relapsed, so you need another round of antimicrobials followed by another round of probiotics. And you're sitting there thinking, how many times am I going to do this?

I know. Because I lived that exact cycle. Not with SIBO specifically, but with candida. Same pattern. Kill the bad stuff, add the good stuff, feel better briefly, crash again. I spent over a thousand dollars in one round of supplements alone. And it never held. This article is going to tell you why.

What the probiotic industry is selling you

And I say industry because that's what it is.

The story goes like this: your gut has good bacteria and bad bacteria. When the bad bacteria take over, because of antibiotics, stress, poor diet, whatever, you get symptoms. Bloating. Gas. Constipation. Brain fog. Skin issues. The solution is to flood your gut with good bacteria. Take enough of the right strains and the good guys will overpower the bad guys. Balance restored.

If you have SIBO, you've heard a more sophisticated version of this. Kill the overgrowth with antimicrobials, then repopulate with targeted probiotics. Soil-based. Spore-based. Specific strains for specific issues. Your functional medicine practitioner probably has a favorite brand they sell from their office. You've probably tried three or four by now.

It sounds so logical. And that's why it's so hard to let go of.

But here's what they don't tell you. The bacteria in most probiotics aren't the same strains that naturally live in your gut. They're strains that are easy to manufacture. Many don't survive stomach acid. The ones that do aren't guaranteed to colonize anything. Your body often just flushes them through.

Researchers gave healthy people probiotics and then checked whether the bacteria actually took hold in the gut. The majority of participants just expelled the probiotics entirely. Their gut didn't want them. And in another arm of the same study, people who took probiotics after a round of antibiotics actually took longer to restore their natural gut balance than people who took nothing at all.

The probiotics slowed recovery. Let that land.

Why your SIBO keeps coming back

Here's the part nobody is explaining to you.

Your gut isn't broken because you don't have enough good bacteria. Your SIBO didn't relapse because the probiotics weren't strong enough. Your gut is overwhelmed because your blood is dirty. And no probiotic on earth is going to clean your blood.

Your gut lining is fed by your blood. Every cell in that lining receives oxygen, nutrients, and immune signals through your bloodstream. When your blood is carrying waste, inflammatory markers, and metabolic debris that should have been cleared but wasn't, it delivers that to your gut lining too.

You're trying to balance bacteria inside a gut that's being fed by dirty blood. It's like planting a garden in contaminated soil. You can put the best seeds in the world into that ground. They're not going to grow. Not because the seeds are wrong. Because the soil is poisoned. Your blood is the soil. Your gut bacteria are the seeds. And every practitioner you've seen has been focused on the seeds.

Your body has been taking in more than it can process and eliminate. Not just food. Stimulation, stress, chemicals in products, medications and supplements layered on top of each other, Rifaximin followed by antimicrobials followed by probiotics followed by biofilm disruptors. All of it ends up in the bloodstream. The blood gets overloaded. The gut gets congested because the blood feeding it is congested. Inflammation builds. And now you're dropping a probiotic capsule into the middle of a system that's drowning.

That's why the SIBO keeps coming back. You clear the overgrowth with antimicrobials. You add probiotics. The gut improves briefly because the immediate bacterial load is reduced. But the blood is still dirty. The blood is still feeding that gut lining the same inflammatory waste. So the environment that created the overgrowth in the first place is still there. And the bacteria respond to the environment. They always will.

I know this because I lived it. I was taking probiotics at bedtime as part of a protocol that included biofilm busters, antifungals, binders, digestive enzymes, and strict keto. Every single day. And my gut didn't improve. My candida didn't go away. My skin didn't clear. Because I was treating the gut like the gut was the problem. The gut was the messenger. The blood was the problem.

Eleven years of bottles on my bathroom counter

I was fourteen years old the first time I had a bathroom counter full of bottles. Not just probiotics. Supplements, skincare products, prescription medications. All dealing with different isolated parts of my health. Different bottles for different symptoms. And that counter stayed full until I was twenty-five. Over a decade of adding, layering, managing, scheduling, swallowing.

And one night I looked at all of it and thought: why does my body need this much help? I'm doing everything they told me to do. Why isn't it working? Why can't my body just do this on its own?

That question changed everything for me. Because the answer is, it can. It was designed to. But not while its blood is carrying the waste of everything being put into it, including the supplements. Every bottle on that counter was one more thing my blood had to process. One more thing my liver had to filter. One more thing my body had to break down and carry through the bloodstream before it could be eliminated. I was adding to the burden while trying to lighten it. For eleven years.

Your gut is not a machine

Your gut is not a machine that needs the right input. Your gut is a living, self-regulating system. It already has the bacteria it needs, or it would, if the blood feeding it was clean.

When you remove what's overloading the bloodstream — the excess inputs, the stimulation that keeps the nervous system in constant activation, the dietary load it can't process, the supplement stack it has to filter — your blood starts to clean up. And when the blood is clean, the gut gets what it actually needs: clean oxygen, clean nutrients, clean signals. The bacteria balance themselves because the environment is finally right. The SIBO doesn't come back because the conditions that created it are gone.

This is what I teach. You clean the blood first. You remove the obstructions. You regulate using proper light and darkness, because your gut has its own circadian rhythm that governs motility, enzyme production, and bacterial balance, and that rhythm is set by the same light signals that regulate your blood. Then you let the body do what it was built to do.

No makeup. No filter. I stopped taking every supplement I owned. I cleaned my blood instead. And my skin cleared, my digestion normalized, my candida resolved, my joint pain disappeared.

My client Michelle came to me with seven years of chronic constipation. She'd been to multiple GI doctors. She was on medication just to have a bowel movement. She was also taking probiotics. Multiple strains. High quality brands. Nothing was moving.

Within the program, she had her first unmedicated bowel movement in years. She lost 30 pounds in four months. Not from a diet. Not from exercise. From cleaning her blood and letting her gut actually work.

She didn't need better bacteria. She needed clean blood.

What the industry needs you to believe

I'm not telling you probiotics are poison. They're not dangerous. But the industry around them needs you to keep buying. Monthly subscriptions. New strains. Better formulas. Refrigerated. Shelf-stable. Soil-based. Spore-based. It never ends. And it never ends because none of it addresses the blood. None of it cleans what's actually circulating through your body and feeding every organ, every cell, every system.

You've spent thousands already. On breath tests. On GI-MAP panels. On Rifaximin at a thousand dollars a round. On antimicrobial herbs. On the probiotic rebuild. On the next practitioner who says they have a different approach but runs the same kill-and-repopulate cycle.

You have been trained to think healing means adding the right thing. But what if healing means removing what made the blood dirty in the first place? What if your body doesn't need more. It needs less.

If you've been cycling through SIBO protocols and your gut still isn't right, it's not because you haven't found the right strain or the right practitioner. It's because every approach you've tried treats the gut while the blood stays dirty. Your body doesn't need another round. It needs clean blood. And clean blood starts with removing what made it dirty in the first place.
